Guarda Superior Cava will be 100% organic by 2025

The DO Cava has announced that by 2025, all reserva, gran reserva and paraje calificado Cavas, representing the top tier of the category, will be 100% organic.

According to the governing body, the Spanish fizz now has “the most exacting standards in the world for quality DO sparkling wines made using the traditional method”.

In addition to its 2025 organic goal, Cavas that fall within the Guarda Superior category are subject to long ageing, and must be made from vineyards with a minimum age of 10 years, with production limited to 10,000 kilos of grapes per hectare. Estates must also comply with traceability audits from harvest to bottle.

“DO Cava is evolving. The number of bottles of organic Cava produced has now reached 13,780,711 units, 35% of which corresponds to premium organic Cava,” said president of DO Cava, Javier Pagés.

“We know that both the consumer and the market are demanding it. This care and preservation of the territory is something with which we identify closely,” he added.

Cava is Spain’s most exported wine, with 60% of its production going overseas to 100 export markets around the world. The DO encompasses over 38,000 hectares of vineyards, 6,800 winegrowers and 370 producers.
