The Macallan releases £60,000 limited edition decanter

Auction favourite The Macallan has released 350 limited edition Lalique decanters as part of its Tales of The Macallan series, priced at £60,000 each.

The first release in a new series of limited edition single malts from the distillery, Tales of The Macallan Volume I pays tribute to Captain John Grant.

Grant is known for building the manor house on the Easter Elchies Estate in 1700 that has served as The Macallan’s home since it was founded in 1824.

The 44.6% ABV whisky was distilled in 1950 and bottled this year. Just 350 Lalique crystal decanters have been released for the Tales of The Macallan Volume I series, with a hefty price tag of £60,000 each.

“This precious whisky echoes of a very old tale. Wood spices, sweet wood smoke and antique oak are omnipresent and make a perfect liaison with the delicate symphony of ripe fruits and spices,” said Macallan’s lead whisky maker, Sarah Burgess.

According to Burgess, the rare liquid offers aromas of grapefruit zest, antique oak, vanilla, melon, wood smoke, nutmeg, ripe plum and almond.

On the palate you’ll find peach apple, wood spice, ginger, hints of clove, sweet wood smoke and yuzu, with citrus and sweet oak on the finish.

The distillery collaborated with illustrator Andrew Davidson to create a series of illustrations housed within a leather-bound book decorated with 24 carat gold to accompany the decanter.
