A case of NV Hambledon Premiere Cuvee

Handpicked by our experts as “The English Sparkling wine” in our Merchant’s Collection, this Premiere Cuvée from award-winning vineyard Hambledon is the ultimate representation of this up and coming style. Anyone who is sceptical about the quality and future potential of English Sparkling wine should taste this and where possible visit the estate. The amount of love, thought, effort and sheer cash that has gone into this project is amazing and the wine absolutely stacks up.

Tasting Note – “Blending the best ‘orchard fruit’ and floral elements of English Sparkling wine with the richer, yeasty tarte tatin and brioche notes found in top Champagnes, Premiere Cuvée also sports a long, mineral-rich, chalky finish – not unlike Bordeaux Index favourite Dom Perignon! We think this is the leading English fizz and urge you to try it.“ – Bordeaux Index

The story behind Hambledon…

Established in 1952 by Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones, Hambledon holds the crown of the oldest commercial vineyard in England. Located in the South Downs of England, the estate was acquired in 1999 by Ian Kellett. Ian had a plan to restore Hambledon to its former glory and following extensive research, he was confident that the site was perfectly suited to the production of sparkling wines. Formed on the seabed of the Paris basin over 65 million years ago, Newhaven chalk is the perfect type of soil for vines to grow and Newhaven chalk is abundant on the Hambledon estate. The very same chalk is found in the best Chardonnay areas of the Côtes des Blancs in Champagne in France. In 2005 a 10-acre ‘test bed’ of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier was planted on a combination of 27 different vine clones and rootstocks to see which gave the best results. Today, Hambledon comprises over 200 acres of vineyards and is the only gravity-fed, state-of-the-art winery in the UK. In 2011 Hervé Jestin, one of Champagne’s leading chefs de cave and renowned expert in minimal intervention winemaking, joined Hambledon. He now directs all winemaking at the Estate alongside Felix Gabillet. With this duo at the helm we are very excited to see what’s next. If this Premiere Cuvée is anything to go by, it will be nothing short of phenomenal.

A case of 2019 Mullineux Old Vines White

Introducing The South African White from our Merchant’s Collection. As part of the Merchant’s Collection, a wine from Mullineux seems like an obvious choice and with good reason, it is simply the best. These guys are the hottest ticket in South African winemaking right now and how this stunning, aromatic, wine derived from ancient vines can possibly hit this price is beyond us. But don’t ask why: just celebrate it!

Tasting note – “To smell, this has floral, white peach and green apple notes with a touch of lavender honey and almond. The palate is heady and generous with delightful honeydew melon, ripe apple and a nutty character. Waxy in texture and laden with character.” – Bordeaux Index

The Story behind Mullineux…

Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, this winery is now one of the most lauded in South Africa. Named ‘Winery of the Year’ numerous times by the Platter Guide, Mullineux were also Tim Atkin MW’s ‘South African Winemakers of the Year’ in 2016. Their vineyards are located in the town of Riebeek-Kasteel, just west of Malmesbury in the Swartland. This area is renowned for its old vineyards, sitting on granite and schist soils. Thanks to this location and the outstanding quality of their fruit it is no surprise their wines are nothing short of exceptional. This wine is made from a blend of seven, sustainably farmed parcels from across the Swartland. The age of the vines, and the granite content in the soil, results in concentrated, complex wines with lifted acidity. The 2019 vintage is a fragrant wine with a richly textured palate and has more than earned its spot in our collection.

A case of 2019 Antinori, P Il Bruciato

Guado al Tasso was one of the cornerstones of the Super Tuscan movement and yet it lived in the shadows of Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Tignanello, perhaps due to a certain sense of rusticity it occasionally showed. The modern face of Guado is much more polished and precise without losing any of that coastal wildness and this character holds true in the Bruciato, its bargain little brother. Antinori Bruciato 2019 has earned itself the position of ‘The Super Tuscan Red’ in our Merchant’s Collection and it’s not hard to see why.

Tasting note –“That Super Tuscan combination of rich fruit, dried herbs and a grilled, savoury note is absolutely in evidence here – you can really tell that this is a ‘little brother’ to a more famous and expensive wine. Juicy and with perfect balance, it will be amazing with grilled meats but is equally approachable on its own.” – Bordeaux Index

The story behind Antinori…

The Guado al Tasso estate is located in the small but prestigious Bolgheri DOC, on the coast of upper Maremma and about 100km southwest of Florence. DOC Bolgheri does not have a long history: it was approved in 1995 and since then it has flown through the ranks. It is now renowned worldwide for its excellent winemaking and this spot in Italy has earned itself the very highest global recognition. The family behind the estate is the esteemed Antinori family. What DOC Bolgheri is lacking in years of history, the Antinori family certainly make up for. They have been perfecting the art of winemaking for over six centuries when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild, in 1385. Twenty-six generations later and Albiera Antinori is at the helm of the wine empire, supported by her two sisters, Allegra and Alessia. Their father, Marchese Piero Antinori, is the current Honorary President of the company. It is a truly family affair.
